Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is thought to be more than 2,000 years old. During the Zhou dynasty, the wall was first created as a military structure to protect the border against rival tribes. From 770 to 476 BC, more separate walls were constructed. During the Qin Dynasty, the separate walls were connected and the Great Wall as we know it began to take shape. Today’s wall in Beijing dates back to the Ming Dynasty, which occurred from 1368 to 1644.

There are many different sections of the wall for tourists to visit. The most frequently toured portion of the wall is Badaling. This section of the wall is the most complete portion, and features some quite majestic structures as well as the Juyonguan Pass. During periods of heavy tourism, you may be forced to visit a different portion of the Great Wall. If this is the case, then you should try the Mutianyu section north of Beijing.

If you’re a traveler seeking a more strenuous trip down the Great Wall, try the Huanghuacheng and Jiankou sections. On your hike, you’ll see gorgeous flowers, a reservoir and steep precipices on either side. Not for those seeking a simple stroll, these sections of the Great Wall are for adventurers only!

Another interesting area of the wall is Shui Guan, also known as Water Pass. Opened to the public in 1995, this area was first constructed during the Ming Dynasty. At the foot of the Water Pass, you can visit locations like the Stone Buddha Temple and the Memorial Gardens of Chinese Personages.

There are many group tours led by knowledgeable guides. This is one of the best ways to visit the wall because you’re sure to see all the best landmarks that you may not know about on your own. If you’re going to be in China for business or pleasure, then you cannot miss the Great Wall of China. It is truly a majestic structure that invokes awe and wonder in all who visit.
