Turkey Travel Guide


Ayasofya
Up until the 16th century, the Ayasofya was the largest church in the world. At this spectacular site you'll see ancient mosaics and incredible architecture. Be sure to check out the dome which can be accessed by going through the Imperial Gate. Admission costs approximately $11.

Blue Mosque
Also known as the Sultan Ahmet Camii, the Blue Mosque was constructed in the 17th century by Sultan Ahmet I who wanted a structure that was even more incredible than the Ayasofya. This domed wonder features an amazing six minarets. Admission to the Blue Mosque is free of charge. Tourists should avoid visiting during times of prayer.

Grand Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar, or Kapali Carsisi is home to over 2,000 different shops, 24 privately owned marketplaces, 65 streets and other features like eateries, mosques, sparkling fountains and even teahouses. At this bustling center of commerce, buyers and sellers haggle over prices as custom dictates. Admission is free but maps can be purchased for around $5 and are highly recommended.

Istanbul Archaeology Museum
Inside Topkapi Palace you'll find the Istanbul Archaeology Museum which is housed inside three buildings. There are more than one million items kept here, including priceless pieces from the 4th century B.C. Admission to this museum costs around $3.50 and includes access to the Cinili Kosk and the Museum of the Ancient Orient.

Yerebatan Cistern
The Yerebatan Cistern is also called the Sunken Palace and is a giant underground pond filled with large goldfish. Tourists view the Cistern by walking on a wood catwalk which leads to the Column of Tears as well as two statues of Medusa's head. The Cistern was first constructed by the emperor Constantine and only opened to the public in 1987. Admission costs around $7.
