The backtracker is a very relieable gps. You need to trust it. I really think it is worth the money. One thing I don't like is the cover on the back. It needs some attention. comes off when you don't want it to,and when you want it off you can't get it off.

This is a great product that I have used a few times when hunting. I no longer have to leave a Hansel & Gretel trail to find my way out of the woods. I am 78 years young and enjoy hunting. Sometimes I get carried away looking for birds or just scouting and enjoy a longer walk than anticipated. I love this, find my car every time now.

I recently took this elk hunting finnally a GPS that is what a lot of us want, just get us back easily, no need to go thru a dozen pages. Great product.

It's possible to get moderately lost hunting in the upper peninsula of Michigan where iron deposits underground can drive a magnetic compass mad. I was looking for something small and light to help me get back to my truck. I have Magellan and Garmin handheld, full-featured GPS units, but was looking for something lighter and frankly, a bit easier to use just to get back to a waypoint. This looked like the perfect item. In concept it is, but in practice, it works only moderately well. Testing the unit showed that it can return you to a general area (about 10-15 meters in diameter) but getting there USUALLY isn't a direct route. You have to be moving for the unit to offer a "reasonable" heading to follow to get back to the reference waypoint. It will direct you in a general sense, but with 10-30 degree directional error. It will often direct you to veer 10-30 degrees AWAY from your target. The unit will eventually figure this out and turn you back toward the target but often not before sending you 50-200 meters in the wrong direction. As would be expected, the further away from the target you are, the more "stable" and accurate the directional heading tends to be. Within 300 meters things tend to get more erratic with the unit sending you on a zig-zag course ROUGHLY back to the target. The weakness appears to be primarily in the digital compass. Distance from the target is fairly accurate (within about 10 meters). So long as you know these limitations, the unit functions reasonably well (the backlight feature is weak). The (in)accuracy though would not make it good for finding your car in a parking lot or any other use where precision in direction, and actual target-location-identity are more demanding. I'll keep it in my pack but I'll also keep a compass and a good topo map!
