Great little flashlight. Works well in a humid environment (like a brewery). Bright enough to see into the mash tun while cleaning, and the hat clip is very handy. Stock up on the batteries though. They die at the worst possible times. The light can get pretty warm if you leave it on the medium and high settings for too long.

An excellent all-purpose flashlight. I got this light for camping and have been very happy with it.



Pros:

- Compact - just slightly larger than a roll of life savers

- Three different light intensity levels... too many high-end flashlights are always super bright.. eats through batteries quick and is blinding for something simple like reading a book in a dim room. The low intensity level on the S3 is perfect for most day-to-day purposes and lasts for 30+ hours (I've personally tested this). The mid range is more than enough for close work or signaling.. not sure what anyone would need the brightest setting for (blinding a charging moose??) but it's there if you need it and it certainly provides plenty of lumen bragging rights.

- Water resistant to 3 feet - no concerns about rain or shallow dunkings

- Shock resistant - can survive mild drops

- Excellent build quality. It's truly a pleasure to hold and use. I find myself carrying it even when it's not on.. it gives you that natural satisfaction of owning a very well made gadget. Anyone who's ever happily wasted time playing with the blades of their Leatherman Micra or Victornox Swiss Army knife knows what I'm talking about.



Cons:

- Expensive. Flashlights seem to come in 2 different price ranges.. the S3 is at the lower end of the high range.. but that still makes it 3 to 4 times more pricy than plenty of good lights on the market.

- Special battery. Not a big deal - if you spend this much on a flashlight you should expect to spend a bit more on batteries - but you can't get them at every corner store. Buy extras before heading out on a long trip.

- Heavy. Actually a pro in many ways - the weight feels great in your hand - but if you're planning to use the clip to attach it to the brim of your baseball hat (as pictured on Leatherman's website) you'd better have a mighty stiff hat brim. If you need a hands-free light get a headlamp instead.

- Twitchy light intensity control.. on vs. off is a robust "click" but changing intensity levels takes some practice and feels a bit tweaky. This is my main personal complaint and the only reason I haven't given the flashlight 5 stars.

This thing is tough, and I mean tough. I have inadvertantly sent it through the wash on our rig twice and our washing machines are brutal (oilfield, hot and lots of solvents) Never missed a beat. Its very small and shockingly bright. I was a bit sceptical about the thing at first as it seems pretty umimpressive looking but the thing is bad ass!

I have the Gerber Shortcut tool, which is similar. There are a few notable differences though:



1) The Gerber tools are accessible without opening the tool. The Leatherman requires opening, but if a tool is extended, closing the handles will act as a locking mechanism. It's a good idea, but I prefer the added convenience of the Gerber design versus the locking. The Micra can arguably be used with more force because of this decision, however.



2) The Leatherman is smaller and quite unobtrusive versus the Gerber. In fact, it makes the Gerber seem enormous. My only complaint is that the metal is a bit slick. Combine this with the small size and the perspiration on my hands, and I don't feel quite as secure versus the Gerber. This is a minor point however, as it serves its purpose well. It would be wonderful if there was some sort of rubberized coating on the Micra, even if it added slightly to the size.



3) Workmanship is excellent. I am a big fan of Gerber tools, and have no complaints, but I am impressed by the tightness of the workmanship (not to imply that the tool is not easy to open, it is).



4) Costs almost twice as much as the Gerber. Not a big deal, because it's still under $20 in most locations.

This tool has a good assortment of tools, some more useful than others. The scissors are great, and easily worth having this on your keys just for that. The bottle opener is functional but a bit annoying to use, and the tweezers are good quality as long as your not looking for precision use.



Overall, the biggest complaint is that you need to open the scissors to use the other functions, which can be painful if your not careful and inconvenient regardless. Ultimately, it will take up a decent amount of space in your pocket for good scissors and tweezers, the other tools are less than exceptional.

I like the quality, feel, and versatility of this tool, but after carrying it and my small Swiss Army knife around alternately, I found that I prefer the Swiss Army model. The Swiss Army is a little less in size and weight, it has a smoother profile, and opening a particular tool is a little quicker and easier. Personally, I find that I use the knife, scissors, or phillips/flat screwdriver blades about 98% of the times I pull it out of my pocket. The Leatherman is a cool tool, but I like the Swiss a little better.

This product is not good because it is the best knife, tweezers, screwdriver or can-opener, but that it is small and compact enough to fit on a keychain, while retaining a certain level of usefulness.  "The greatest multitool EVER!" 2009-10-30

What a great tool. I am a huge fan of the Super Tool 200, which i still use, so I will use that as a comparison. I've had the 300 for about a month and a half, so it is still in the break in stage, as it is quite stiff to open and close. A quick usage background on myself, I work as a mechanic/technician on vehicles and equipment ranging from utility ATVs to diesel engines to heavy equipment, including road service calls. I wear and use this tool daily. It holds up extremely well in rough industrial shop environments. My Super Tool has seen battery acid, hammering, prying, twisting steel banding among other things, being dropped on concrete, and it still works wonderfully.



Noticeable improvements: My well broken in 200 has the problem of flinging the blade out when I open the tool. They corrected this problem on the 300 by inserting a small detent to create a positive stop at the inner base of both the straight and serrated blades.



The cutaway to access either blade is much bigger. Makes it easier to open the blade, given the extra small bit of effort required with the addition of the detent stop and if you wear utility gloves.



The plier head is much stronger and wider with replaceable wire cutter blades. The plier jaws on the 300 are square cut and thicker instead of rounded over like the 200. (just remember to use threadlocker when you re-install the torx screw after blade replacement)



The depth of the handle is noticeably bigger, though not by much, adding a more solid, bulky feel in my hand. I have relatively large hands and it is very comfortable.



The phillips screwdriver is stronger with a more beefed up shank.



The saw blade is slightly wider, adding more strength.



The blade release button is greatly improved. Consisting of a wide thumb pad the width of the handle, it makes for releasing the tools a breeze, especially while wearing gloves.



The lanyard eyelet is bigger



The flat tipped screw drivers (all 3) are bigger with a more professional bevel at the tip.



The case. The case I received with the 300 is leather/nylon combo. In the time that I've worn this tool, the black finish is starting to wear off on the backside. I prefer the feel of the nylon case as it seems to have a more flat profile on my belt.



This tool does NOT have scissors, as I've read complaints about this. I have personally have never needed it in a multitool.



For a basic, heavy duty full size multitool, I highly recommend the Super Tool 300. I like it enough that I am going to buy another one (maybe the black oxide version) to keep in the truck. For the price offered, you can't go wrong or beat it when you consider other smaller multitools can cost almost twice as much. Great value. Thanks again, Leatherman, for another great tool.

An upgrade over the Core and Super Tool 200, the Super tool 300 supports MASSIVE pliers that are much stronger than any other Leatherman. Also, the wire cutters appear to be removable which is a new feature.



Other than this, it isn't much different than a Super Tool 200 or Core... in other words, if you want new features, it doesn't deliver.



Having said this, I still highly recommend it for the added plier strength and wire cutter flexibility.



Quality is average, just like all modern Leathermans. This is not as well put together as the older Leathermans, but it is still a good (but not great) tool.

This is one heck of a useful tool for people doing more than just running around in the woods. I use it on the rig, the knifes are super sharp but look out for the safety man cause they are long. Get the lanyard attachment so you dont drop it cause its pretty good sized and the bit set, they are pretty impressive and one of he plastic sets fits nicely in the sheath. The Surge has the better pliers than the Wave and it makes a difference. This is the better choice. Better than the crunch, trust me, the tool selection is much better and the crunch pliers arent really that good at anything as they really dont open that big. I am pretty happy with this thing.

I received a "Surge" about a year ago as a gift. I would never have paid so much for a knife or a multi-tool, but I was pleased to receive it. However, I didn't see it getting much use, other than sitting in my junk drawer.



I was wrong.



Since the day I got it, few times have I gone anywhere without it in my pocket. And trust me, it's the days you forget this tool that you realize how useful it is.



Let's be honest: The "Surge" is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) multi-tools that Leatherman produces. It is big and it is heavy. But that means it is well-built. Extremely well built. Mine has taken everything from a second-story fall onto concrete to an (unintentional) dip in the lake and it has come away without a scratch or trace of rust. And I am not gentle on this thing: I do not go out of my way to sheath it, keep it dry, or try not to drop it (which I do quite frequently, as I am incredibly clumsy). It still looks as good as the day I got it. In fact, the blades are still razor-sharp, despite never sharpening them yet.



My one complaint, if you can call it that, would be that when the tool is folded, it still has some sharp edges around the body that tend to wear out the pockets of the pants one is wearing. But keep in mind, I do not keep mine in the (very nice) leather sheath provided, I just throw it into my jeans pocket in the morning. This is really not a knife that is meant to be carried that way, but aside from a little wear and tear on my work pants, I have no complaints.



I would never have bought this Leatherman on my own, but I feel lucky to have gotten one as a gift. And I know that if anything ever happened to this one, I would not hesitate to rush out and buy a replacement.

The Good: Leatherman's are very sturdy and this is no exception, the construction is very well done and will not fall apart any time soon. The weight leaves you with a very comforting feeling as to the construction.



The Bad: Some of the bits can round off too easy but if you are careful it should not be a problem. Size is a problem if you want to carry this everywhere with you. Pocket carry is not possible. (my brother tried that and had to get new pants after this shredded his pockets). I personally did not like the leather sheath as much as the nylon but to each his own.



The Ugly: This is by no means a small or light tool but it is the best on the market and has every option one could want. Buy and do not regret it!!



If you are looking for a great tool that should be in every car look no further than this one. Several times now i have had a problem that only a leatherman could solve. You will not regret this purchase.

Bought this multi-tool as a birthday gift for my husband and he is loving it! It's lighter than the bigger tools, and the carabiner clips onto a beltloop easily. He can't stop fiddling with it. Makes me smile.



His only wish is that the screwdriver bits were alternated with a phillips and a blade head on each bit with the sizes being on different bits. If that makes sense. All in all a very good buy and Leatherman is a quality product. I used to work in a retail knife store, and never had a single complaint about the company or their products.

Excellent product. Great quality, just the right mix of tools. I read several reviews for this before purchasing. Most of the negative ones focused on the lack of some tools. Most people understand that if they're looking at this product in the first place. The one review that I thought summed this product up the best said that "This is a knife, with a few other tools attached". It's not a multi-tool with a fold-out knife. I couldn't agree more. The knife is the heart of this tool. I've had no complaints and haven't missed my scissors at all.



My other other warning/comment is that the one-handed knife operation is impossible to do with your left hand. Overall, just very uncomfortable for a lefty.

I'm not going to repeat the glowing positive reviews I've already read here - I'll just say that it is light, tough, and has the tools I use on a daily basis. Definitely my favorite multitool so far.



I have only one complaint, and it is one that I haven't read in the reviews yet (not that I read all of them): whichever bit is left in operational position is at risk of falling out. My slotted screwdriver bit fell out more than a couple of times but luckily I found it. Each time but the last, that is. Since I have not seen mention of this in the chunk of reviews I read, I wonder if mine is a mismanufactured unit.



Regardless, this is the best multitool I've ever owned. And the carabiner/bottle opener rocks. The clip hangs on to the bottle cap instead of slinging it on the floor to later be trod upon by this bare footed inebriate.

I thought about getting this tool for a while, and it's worth it. I've passed up other Leatherman products because they're bulky with tools I'll rarely if ever use. I like the slim profile and light weight; you can stash it in a pocket without it causing you to list to one side. I also really like the carabiner, which means you don't need an ostentatious sheath or holster. The fact that the knife is readily available without needing to open up the tool is a plus, too. In fact, this makes a very handy replacement for your basic pocket knife.



The knife is pretty sharp - perhaps not as razor-edged as on Swiss Army/Victorinox multitools, but it should be serviceable.



I haven't put it the other tools through their paces yet, but this tool is solid - I don't think I'll be disappointed.

As far as the lanyard ring goes I'd give that 4 Stars, it's very strong but sticks up a little to high. If I were a climber I'd use this everyday. The clip is definitely a 2 Star piece of equipment. The clips rides too low on the pocket mouth of my side pocket, I wear Carhart Bib overalls. In order to pull the tool from my narrow side pocket I have to squeeze the tool from the bottom and work it up to pull it out of my pocket. I was getting out of my Van and the seat belt caught the bottom of the raised edged of the clip and it snapped off at the top of the clip... bummer.

The pocket clip needs a re-work in my opinion especially the top edge so your able to pull it out easily.

I was looking at this product for probably 45 minutes or an hour and thinking about if I should buy it or not. I thought: "why should I spend $5 of my wife's hard earned money for this little piece of metal? Shouldn't leatherman tools have come with one included when u buy it?" I mean, the tool comes with a carrying case, but if you use it a lot, it's annoying to constantly put it back in the case, and the clip is very useful. So I put it in my wishlist so that I could revisit it and think about it some more. I mean, I think the clip is worth about a dollar, but amazon doesn't let you put in bids. I see there are other people selling used ones for $2.33 now, but that wasn't there when I first looked at it, and its still $1.33 more than I want to spend. And I didn't want to pay shipping on this thing. I mean, you're gonna have to wake up a lot earlier in the morning to rip me off, u know what I'm sayin'?



Anyway, my little sister bought it for me partly because she feels sorry for me wishing for $5 pieces of metal and partly because that's how her and her husband roll. Her statement to the current financial crisis is: "why doesn't everyone that lost their job just get a new job? They could wash my husband's Lamborghini, or with training, they could give my dog daisy a french manicure. Oh, I'm so tired of hearing people whine"



Well, I learned that if I'm going to put stuff on my wishlist, I should set my sights higher than $5. I think I'm going to update my wishlist and put on some wicked sunglasses and driving gloves for the next time they let me race the lambo. As far as my review for this little $5 metal clip goes, its pretty useful and I would recommend it if you can get it for $1 with free shipping OR find a buyer in the family member that parks in the handicap parking spot because there was no valet and the ticket is only $250.

The clip is great. I use it everyday because I prefer to wear my Leatherman Wave on my jeans rather than using the nylon belt-clip holster included with the knife. The clip is well designed and does the trick.



The lanyard ring is indeed quick release but stays on when you need it. I find it less useful than the clip. It is not good for clipping on and off during use.



It was not clear to me when I bought this that the two items were incompatible. They attach to the knife at the same point, so you must choose to use one or the other.



Good accessory. Clip should come standard with the knife.

I work in the electronics department at a major warehouse. I have to put the base on televisions, put T.V. stands, and home theater systems together too. The bit driver extention is very useful. I don't have to look for screwdrivers because I can keep this in the sheath with my leatherman and bits. It allows for excellent torque. Very handy on screws that are set deep. I love it.

If you have a leatherman (one of the more modern ones with the interchangeable drivers bits) then you need this extension bar. It enables you to get at those awkwardly placed screws and bolts. Best of all this and the bit set all fit in my leather surge sheath.

no real help with this extension. will give you a bit more torque but can easily do without it. if you buy the bits and this extension then you dont need to buy a leatherman to use your bits so thats something to think about if you just want an assortment of their bits but not really the knife. thats what i ended up doing, leaving this extension with some bits in my car.
