 "Excellent Multi-Tool with some drawbacks" 2010-04-11

I have been using the Crucial for almost 4 months now. I work in Outdoor Education for a University so I spend a fair amount of my time in the woods. I can honestly say I use this tool almost every single day. I needed something that I could keep comfortably in my pocket. It needed to have a good blade and pliers with wire cutters. I searched around and was torn between the Crucial and the Leatherman Freestyle. I settled on the crucial because of the addition of the carabineer and screwdrivers.



I was impressed with this tool right off the bat and grow fonder of it each and every day...with a few exceptions. I think it will be easiest to break this review down into sections.



Blade

The blade is easy to open thanks to the little thumb piece attached to it. The locking mechanism is very secure and inspires confidence when you are using the blade in a way you shouldn't (let's be honest we all do it at some point). On the flipside of the lock being secure, it can be a little stiff while trying to close the blade. I found myself using a second hand when the knife was new. The blade doesn't dull too easily. I have only needed to sharpen mine once since I have been using it. I like the shape of the blade. I have found myself using the flat tip for scraping stuff that I would normally use the sharpened edge for in the past. Oh and I love that I don't have to unfold the knife to get to the pliers.



Pliers/Wire Cutters

The pliers are my most used tool, and are great for what they are. They are sturdy and grip very well. They will not let you down as long as you know they are not vice grips. Also, because of the shape of the handle, you need to hold the pliers with the gray part against your palm. Otherwise the stylistic flair will dig into your palm and cause irritation. Flip the tool over and the problem is solved. The wire cutters work well and have not disappointed me yet. I have used them for bicycle cables, automotive wiring, and cutting cord in the field and have not been disappointed. I have seen reviews complaining about the small gap between the cutting surfaces. I had never even noticed that until I read the review.



Screwdrivers

I have used them both multiple times and while I'm not ecstatic about them I'm happy enough. They are both very short which can hinder their use. However, if you unfold the tool it makes the Phillips head screwdriver much more usable. I have never used either of these on very stubborn screws, and would walk to my toolbox to get an actual screwdriver if it is a possibility. With that being said, they have and will continue to come in handy and I am glad that Gerber included them.



Carabineer/Bottle Opener

I love having a carabineer on my knife for when I'm camping. I can attach it to my bag when it's not in my pocket and it is easily accessible. I have also found the carabineer to be the perfect tool for pulling out stubborn tent stakes. The bottle opener works surprisingly well although I have only used it a handful of times. I do have two complaints about the carabineer. First, the gate is somewhat weak. It doesn't always return to its closed position without a little help. Second, there is no lock for the carabineer. At first there was enough friction to keep it open somewhat securely. However, that has worn away and now I can open and close it with the flick of my wrist. I don't like how easily it moves.



Pocket Clip

I love pocket clips on knives. I won't even consider buying a folding pocket knife without one. The pocket clip on the crucial served me well until about two days ago. I went to grab my knife and realized it had fallen into my pocket. I pulled it out and found the clip had broken off. I would simply put a new one on and it wouldn't be a big deal but it broke one of the small torx screws off...nearly flush with the handle. It's so small I am not sure the best way to get it out. Hopefully this will be covered by their lifetime warranty.



Conclusion

Overall I have been very happy with the crucial. There have been a couple small annoyances but nothing that has hindered the tool's functionality. I will definitely buy another when the time comes, and may even purchase a few as gifts. The crucial loses a star due to the carabineer and the pocket clip. I think the crucial is a great tool for a great price, and will be heartbroken if I ever lose it.

I purchased the Gerber Crucial in order to have a small, lightweight knife/plier combo to carry in my pocket while boating. There are constant needs for a knife and for small pliers on a sailboat (loosening shackles, tight knots, etc) and I find that I'm unlikely to carry one of the larger multitools around. I just throw the Crucial into my pocket on the way to the boat and I'm good to go. I've also found that the screwdriver tools are self-locking which is nice when working on a tight fastener. I read several reviews on this tool before purchase and I found the product exactly as described.

The Gerber Crucial Tool is unique as pocket tools go. It has only the most essential tools for unexpected, everyday use: serrated knife blade (very sharp), flat head and phillips head screwdrivers, pliers, and a carabiner. I haven't figured out what the carabiner is for except to securely hold the tool to a belt or belt loop, but the other tools are great. All tools except the carabiner and the pliers have a lock to keep them open when in use, which is an excellent safety feature. The needle-nose pliers are slim and appear to be very strong, and the plier mechanism is placed inside the tool to give smooth handles for use. The shape is ergonomic so that it fits most hands comfortably. This is a good choice as a gift for that special "someone" who likes to do his own repairs.

 

 "Great little "pocket" knife" 2010-03-26

OK, I just received mine today and have not had much of a chance to use it, but there are already a lot of noticeable differences over my old Leatherman and the Swiss Army Climber knife of which this knife now shares company. First, I like the dual carry design, featuring both a pocket clip and a caribiner. The pocket clip is easy to slide on and off the pocket, without any additional prying to get it to go on, like some clips need (as in, they don't always slide easily on to the lip of the pocket). Also, it's nice to see the caribiner fold into, and be parallel to, the design of the knife. Some knives with 'biners have them perpendicular through a hole in the knife, and this makes the knife bulkier to carry. This knife is already a little on the bulky side, and the in-line 'biner maintains the slim(mer) design nature of this Gerber.



Others have commented that this knife is a little bulky, but given that a knife even a little smaller than this usually needs a belt sheath, this one fits nicely in the pocket, especially when you can clip it on and not have it free-floating around. I can barely notice the knife in any pocket.



Lastly, the pliers design is much more ergonomic that any other knife i have had. Having to grip metal and put pressure on it can hurt, like it does with the Leatherman, and this feels much more comfortable. I can't attest to it's strength, but I'm sure someone else has tried it to tell you if it's a durable set of pliers.

This is a great knife, Gerber has been known for quality for years in the knife industry and this one does not disappoint. The F.A.S.T. System is great, just apply a little pressure to the thumb stud and it quickly flips into position. It includes a built in safety switch so there are no accidental openings while in your pocket should you be rummaging around in there. The body of the knife has a great feel to it, I do wish it was a little more tactile in grip, but that is only a minor complaint. The blade has a great feel to it and has a great finish, and it comes VERY sharp and will keep an edge on it for a while. The pocket clip is fantastic as well, and just one more thing that goes to show you this is a REALLY well made knife. I can recommend this to you without any hesitation, because you will be very pleased to have this high quality of knife for this kind of price which is less than $30 dollars!



Just a thought, I picked up the fine edge knife because it suits all of my needs, they do make a 40% ( I think, could be more) serrated version of this knife if you need something with a little more bite too it, but its the same price and quality.

I am a fan of good knives costing less than $100. This knife is now my favorite EDC. Here's why:

I bought this knife to replace my primary knife I carry after I recently lost it in the field. I haven't owned this knife too long, but I do want to share my initial reactions.



Pros:

Tight and sturdy hinge - solid hinge while still allowing smooth movement; seems like it will hold up.

Well designed thumb studs - ergonomic without being too big and snagging on your pocket.

Lightweight - plastic sides covering steel frame.

Sturdy spring steel pocket clip - removable if you don't like the clip.

Great value - Gerber knives are not in the same league as their prices.



Cons:

Wasn't very sharp out of the box - Gerber's sharpen up nice and take an edge, so it wasn't a deal-breaker for me.

The finger release is kind of hard to use - you can either use the thumb stud (which works awesome) or the finger release with your index finger, but unfortunately I find the finger release to be really hard to work.

The button lock is kind of weird - it does exactly what it is supposed to do, but it takes some getting used to.



The bottom line: This is a great knife to use as a daily carry. You might need to sharpen it up at first, but it seems tough as nails and should serve you well for a long time.

This is an excellent small hatchet/axe. I brought it camping with me and it helped me chop up our firewood into smaller pieces with ease. The construction is very strong for what appears to be some sort of plastic. However, the handle is too short and the piece too light to be very useful if you're chopping very much wood.

Got this just in time for an overnight bicycle ride/ camping trip. It packed well in the internal side pocket of my Xtracycle. For a regular bicycle pannier it might be a little long.



I bought two bundles of wood from a local establishment and was able to split the wood without to much effort. Some pieces took a couple of whacks to split and the more knotty pieces I didn't bother trying. But most pieces split on the first try. I had too much fun splitting the wood that I realized I didn't try the saw part out but just by the looks of it there shouldn't be a problem sawing up small branches.

This hatchet delivers on what is promised. The gator grip offers more traction than I expected. The magnet closure on the saw is secure but still allows for easy drawing. The hatchet is MUCH lighter and sharper than the average ten dollar "Coleman Special". The included sheath makes it much easier to carry as well. The saw works very well on branches less than 5 inches in diameter. The finish near the hatchet blade edge wears off almost instantly, but that is to be expected. The finish on the rest of the head has not shown signs of wear after moderate use.

This multi tool wont wow you with any new features, but its a very sturdy and well made tool. The main knife certainly leaves a bit to be desired, but it works just fine for me at work to open boxes occasionally. I like the spring pliers, my last Leatherman didnt have that feature. Also, the design is pretty cool looking. The phillips head screw driver is a little cheesy, but i only needed a #2 for the most part, and this works great for that size.



Overall a well made multi tool with all of the most used and important tools I need.

Great all around tool, well made, feels good in the hand, etc. The drawbacks are the dinky Phillips head, and the shortness of some of the blades. Other reviewers have said most everything I would say, so I'd just say I love this, but PROTIP: in the photos above, find the one the person uploaded of how you can trim off a few millimeters with a Dremel for a more comfortable hand grip. It made a huge difference and should be considered by Gerber as a permanent fix.

I have two of these multi-tools, purchased mainly to do very boring work around the house and yard. The tool selection is good and eliminates carrying around several other screwdrivers, knives, and pliers. Actually, I use the pliers more than anything else to do everything from yank rusted staples in my fence to holding nails to bending aluminum flashing. The screwdrivers work as advertised and don't deform as some others do, even with a good twist. The saw works, but honestly I don't have a lot of reason to use a 2" saw around my yard. At least it kept its edge. Bottle opener and can opener work, though the can opener takes a little practice to not destroy to top of the can. As for the knife, I've sharpened some pencils and attacked the inside of a coconut with it. All said, a rugged tool.



As mentioned, I have two of these. The reason I don't give it five stars is that the feel of each is slightly different. One is looser and freer and quite easy to use. The other arrived with (it appears) a coating of WD40 over everything. Even with that, the tool felt stiff and it took a good hour of repeatedly opening and closing it before it loosened up enough. Still a good value though compared to similar tools.

Ive been in scouts my whole life so ive owned many difrent knives, this I have to say has been the best one yet, Ive cut wood, rope, cardboard, cloth and some copper wire with it and it takes it all. The shieth is a litle hard to deal with since its designed for a military type uniform not jeans and a leather belt, so I took all the velkro of and just tuck it under my belt with a cord around it. Great product!!

I've always had great experiences with Gerber, from their multi-tools to the basic little pocket knife. And the LMF II doesn't disappoint.



I received one as a gift about a 6 weeks before my last deployment and liked it so much I ordered 20 for the guys in my unit. Every knife saw daily use during our 18 months in Afghanistan. We used them for anything and everything. It's not exactly what I'd consider a fighting blade, because of it's size. But it does hold up so well to all kinds of abuse, that I'd have no problem using in a combat situation.



For anyone looking to buy a good quality utility blade that looks great and is well made...the LMT II is great for the price. Don't be deterred by the lesser reviews. Anyone who buys knives knows they often come semi-sharp, so expect to do some sharpening. Also, you need to know what a particular knife is designed for...if you intend to punch a car door with this, you'll be a fool with a broken blade. Yes, I know from experience...but I sent it off to Gerber abd they replaced it no questions asked. FYI: Gerber is one of the few companies that truly back their product. Five years ago they exchanged a multi-tool that got fused in an electrical incident.

I have had this knife for about a year and the first issue I ran into was the velco on the sheath. It boggles the mind to thing that a knife that is made for combat/survival would have a sheath that would allow the entire knife to fall from it. After some testing, I gave up on the sheath.



The blade of the knife is study, and can take a beating but it is not full tang, so it has a weak point at the lower half of the grip. Also with a split plastic handle, it is like to "pop" apart in the middle.



All in all, good blade, decent handle, $@!#$@! sheath.

I love this knife, nice and sturdy, and fits great in the hand. The sheath is also well built, with a lot of carry options. This knife is built for military survival use, so it's built rock solid.



The paperwork included /w the knife is a bit sparse, it only shows the various carry options. One thing you may not see in the pictures on Amazon, is the sheath also has two handle straps, which are VERY tight. So tight I could not get them snapped. I went to Gerbers' website, and contacted support via email. They promptly replied, with information, the solution and other suggestions!



This is what their reply was:



Thank you for contacting Gerber Blades regarding your LMF II Sheath Issues. This knife is hugely popular with our Government Agencies and because of the strict testing requirements of this product; the sheath must pass a 10-G Gravity Test to withstand severe warfare conditions.



Gerber is aware that the straps may be extremely difficult and are working towards a resolution. However, there is a way to "stretch" the straps, making them easier to use.



Make sure both straps that contain the snaps are "unsnapped" and open

Place your LMF II Knife fully into the sheath

Extract your knife back out of the sheath about a half an inch

Snap both straps around the smaller portions of the knife handle at this point

With the snaps fastened, push the knife back into the sheath

Allow approximately 24 hours for the straps to stretch



After about 24 hours, your straps should have stretched to a more appropriate size allowing for easier functionality of the product.



To enhance the extraction of your blade with more ease, add a drop of oil on the inside hilt (tongue) of the sheath. The handle will rub the tongue with less friction and should extract much easier.



Now that is customer service, plus their website help section is top notch!

This knife is going to be tested next time I go camping, so I will keep this review updated. So far I highly recommend this knife.

Pros:



- Tiny tiny tiny! It would look proportional only next to a toddler. They give you a small nylon bag that this shovel fits in when fully folded in.

- Looks sturdy. I have not used it - got it for the car, for when I get stuck and need to dig dirt or snow.

- Inexpensive but very cool toy :)



Cons:



- Handle way too short. Digging would not be very efficient.

- Probably too flimsy for anything serious. Do not attempt digging solid dry dirt. I bet snow is the best use of this.

I came across this Gerber shovel in my Amazon recommendations recently. I own the very same model that I bought at the LL Bean store in Freeport, Maine 2 years ago. I was not as much of an Amazon shopper back then as I am today. But I wish now that I was. I paid $38 at LL Beans for this model, and that was 2 years ago. At the time I remember them not having much of a selection, but this shovel seemed very well made, rugged, and easy to use. I figured I could do a lot worse for the price. As it turns out, I could have done a lot better. Forgetting the shellacking I took on the price of this shovel, I highly recommend you not only buy this model if you are in the market for one, but I also suggest you forget the shopping around and just buy it here. This is probably the best quality folding shovel you will ever find for the price they are asking. Especially, if you buy it as part of a package deal and get the free shipping thrown in. If you are one that has ever visited hiking or outdoor gear stores than you know how expensive any survival type equipment can be. They have a fool proof way of drawing you into spending as many bucks as you can on whatever it is they are offering by hammering home the point that it's your life and family you are talking about here. The real truth is that a lot of people buy equipment that is far more expensive than they will ever have a reason to need, or even use at all. As anyone that is an avid outdoor enthusiast knows, a folding camp shovel has lots of uses along on a camping or hiking trip. For those looking for a latrine shovel for back country hiking, this will work for you, but mind - it is heavy. You may think 2-3 pounds isn't much, but it can be. That said, is fairly well constructed and can serve double duty as a hammer.



Pros: Rugged construction. Collapses down pretty well. Grip is contoured to be comfortable.



Cons: It is heavy (for its size), but that does contribute to its ruggedness. The 'blade' could lock into place a bit more securely than a screw-down ring. Has a Hammer 'head', if you'd call it that.



Overall: It's a nice shovel if you don't mind the extra few pounds. Also good for your car, should you get stuck on snow and you need to dig some space out to get rolling again.



P.S. To Gerber - have you guys ever thought of making interchangeable blades on something like this? Have a large PC avalanche blade and then the smaller steel blade for dirt/soil? Just a thought...maybe I should do that.

shovel is small like ice cream scoop small, but works great for camping and hiking. its light weight and doesn't add alot ot weight to your pack.
